I like Montesas, my first proper bike was a 1972 Cota when I was 13. Ive had this '76 Montesa Cota 247 for about 12 years now, I ran it in standard trim for a while, had a trials sidecar on it for a while and had some greaat fun on it out on the hills and up in the woods over the years. About 7 or 8 years ago I took the fiberglass tank seat unit off it and had the alloy undertank modified so it was a secure fit, the seat is a Wassell universal trials one fitted to a seatbase from a '70s Bultaco. The motor is strong, it can be a bit tempremental sometimes but a pocketfull of sparkplugs and some fresh petrol usually gets the fun started!!

I was down country at the weekend at a trade fair, I managed to get Sunday off and meet up with some other Indian builders in Central Scotland.

Neil Grieve's Nordian is a stunner, 84 cubic inches of Chief motor squeezed into a wideline featherbed frame, you can read Neil's build story here on the Virtual Indian

Neil has got a 640 Bonneville Sport Scout on the bench, he hopes to have it on the road this year, I cant wait to see it finished!

Next we headed over to see Willie in Falkirk, Willie bought a 1925 Scout motor and transmission from me a couple of years ago.. he's been busy gathering parts to build a wall bike, he has also picked up a 101 wall bike basket case, along with his 741 bobber and his son Scott's three Papooses they have their shed's full!

Ive had quite a few paypal transactions over the last 10 years, i use it through ebay and for part sales from the blog or just for deals with mates, its quick easy and relatively cheap.

At the weekend i got this email about my Model T

"Hi,Do you still have it for sale? i will like to make an offer of the exactly amount you want to sell it,payment will be made through paypal and i will arrange for the pick up as well. Cheers, Andrew."

I emailed the fella back told him that i would prefer either cash on collection or bank transfer before collection, but didnt accept hi value transactions via paypal due to fees etc

I got a long winded reply saying that he was offshore and was buying the "item" for his son's birthday and paypal was the only way he could do the deal..... alarm bells ..... Pretty much the same woording and story we got in an email from a bogus online buyer trying to buy a £950 gold pendant from our shop (dayjob) using paypal

Sellers beware, paypal says the following in there terms

Opened up the gearbox casing cos the kicker wasn't returning, found that the spring had broken the tang where it locates in the hole in the inner casting... got a spare spring so no big deal... apart from the worn "ramps" either side of the hole. I'll need to build them up and redrill the hole.

on to the front wheel, which needs a bit of modification, its a BSA single sided hub that had been modified by someone in the past to take a Norton type wheel spindle, it'll need to modded again to take the narrower 14mm one that fits the Ceriani fork.

1974, I was 10 years old. I cant remember which of the bike mags it was in, my older brothers used to get both Bike and Superbike, but there was a big colour pic of the new US export only Triumph TR5mx Avenger. The BSA unit single fans among you will know that its was really a rebadged BSA B50mx and it was just the newly formed NVT group clearing old BSA stock on.......... but to a young Triumph fan with an obsession for big dirt bikes, it was the most beautiful bike I had ever seen!

Nine years later I was hanging around Claymore MC's yard in Bellshill near Glasgow (as I quite often did!) when I saw a little orange bike tucked in behind a couple of Shovel chops, I pulled it out and there she was TUN507J a UK spec TR25SS the smaller 250 version of my dream bike...it was a friday afternoon, I'd just been paid..... a bit of negotiation with a guy called "Stonewall" and I was the proud owner of the wee orange beastie... It was dragged home in the back of a works van, rattlecan painted black and given a rewire and a top end rebuild

I sold TUN in 1987 just before I got married, promised myself I'd get myself a 500 to replace it... I'm still looking!

Today I was browsing the web and I stumbled across this cool Texan TR5, great story here

There are a couple available is the USA, but the shipping cost would make them too pricey

If you come across a good straight TR5MX for sale in the UK ... get in touch ;-)

Small rural filling station on the busy A832, closed a few years ago but was turning over in excess of £350K of fuel. Potential for developement into an unmanned station which would increase its profitablity dramatically and also increase turnover considerably due to extended hours. Grants are available to do this. The two underground tanks and one bunded steel tank above ground have been kept with a liquid seal, the pumps have been removed and capped. Services on site, Timber building will need renovation or replaced with a more suitable workshop/retail type building. Half acre site has outline planning for a 1.5 storey house.

Tigger was my old series one Landrover, a 1958 swb that I bought in 1988 from Alex Lindsay in Broxburn.It was already kitted out for CCV trials with the fuel tank boxed into the pick up bed and a very dodgy steam tube roll bar. The drive home highlighted a few ..er . issues. First off the motor was knackered , it was still fitted with the old IOE 2l that it had had when it left Solihull, the bigends were rumbling away and it smoked its way through a couple of pints of oil on the slow run home to Glasgow.
I was lucky, my Dad managed to get me an ex MOD 2l IOE motor that had been used by the army cadets as a demo motor. It came in a crate with a little brass plate on the side that said it had been rebuilt by the REME in 1964 and it didnt look like it had been fired up since!

The motor was swapped in over a weekend and fitted with an alloy head from a Rover 60 saloon car and a freshly rebuilt SU carb. Fitted a front axle with the bigger 11" drums up front from a later series 3 LWB and 5 leaf springs as used on MOD airportable (lightweight) landys.

I took the now much healthier tigger over to Alex in Broxburn and had him fit a full truck cab roll cage to the then new ARC regs and fitted a set of Firestone SAT tyres onto wide weller spoke wheels

For the best part of 5 years Tigger was my only car, used every day to get to work on the building sites, and trialled with the SLROC at weekends, it only finally got taken off the road in 1998 to get the chassis replaced..... after years of abuse it had cracked right through below the cab, it was only the roll cage holding it together!

I moved north from Stirling in 1998 with Tigger in bits strapped to a trailer with the intention of rebuilding it with a new galvanised chassis once I had some spare time.................

Five years on, The engine had been sold to a friend to keep his series one going, the body work had all but dissapeared with various uninvited visits from tinks in white vans to the yard where it was being kept, and all I was left with was a logbook, a flatpacked rollcage, and a V5c. An advert on the Highland 4wd Clubs website caught my eye.. and a trip down to Drumnadrochit saw me coming home with a spaceframed coil sprung special strapped to the trailer..... Tigger2 had arrived!!!

An early rangerover rolling chassis cut n shut to 86" wheelbase and fitted with a tubular space frame with trimmed down series one wings and doors. The motor is a nice and healthy late 60's Rover V8 from a P6 saloon car mated up to a rangerover 4 speed box..

The Anderson Special

Built and developed in the 1920's and '30s by Glasow garage owner James Anderson. The Mk2 Anderson Special is powered by twin humber engines and was a successful hill and road trial car of its time.

Some really forward thinking innovations on the csr, fold away headlamps, wind up main windscreen, fully independent suspension...

The mk2 was capable of speeds in excess of 100mph and was very competitive in its day.
Now on display at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow

Id love to take it for a blast up the "Rest and be thankful"

I Bought this bike in 2006 while living in Europe, it was imported earlier this year when I moved back to England and is now on an English date related registration, the headlight and KPH speedo were replaced for UK compliant headlight and MPH speedo it has done 40,000 miles in total and I have the previous KPH speedo which documents this, it has an excellent service history and has had the oil changed every 5000km (3100mls) with no expense spared, it has always been run on Mobil 1 engine oil and S&S oil Filters, it has excellent Avon Venom tyres, good drive belt and brake pads and has road tax till November 2012 and MOT till March 2012… this bike is a press and go anywhere machine that makes for a great tourer but also has the advantage of a tweeked engine (£4,000 in engine work) it now has enough attitude to set parked car alarms off when it passes them and when it comes on cam will chew up and spit out any of the newer standard 96cui 6 speed harley’s. This bike is ultra reliable !!
I’m going to miss this mile eater but I must sell it to complete other projects, only serious enquiries please

Cut the rear 1/4 off the bsa seatbase leavimg 2 tabs to be trimmed tp fit the mounting points on the zed tail......

Tailpiece fits neatly down over the base, a littlle bit of trimming here and there then it can be rivetted together

Sits just about right, brackets line up with shocker bolts and with a little trimming..........

Having had a bit of success with the SU on my Sport Scout, ive been on the lookout for a 1.5" SU to go on the '40 chief motor. I had a bid on a really nice h4 off a '39 Jag SS but it went wayyyyy over my budget.
I put a low bid on this H38-11 which is a Hitachi built version of SU's h4 ... As fitted to Datsun 240z in pairs and used by the BMC Mini racing guys. Turned up this morning...... Brand new in its original box!

Yesterday i put the Ironhead on a car jack and stripped off the knackered rear shocks, typical HD the bushings aint the same as the pair of good Triumph ones ive got lying under the bench! I pushed the still serviceable HD bushes out and the ones in the Triumph shockies out so i could fit the MoCo ones using my press.……

Ran outta time last night so i'll have to press em in tomorrow

The jack must have a leak cos when i looked at the bike on the trailer/bench this morning it had sunk down ..... Looks so much better sitting low!!!

Been lookong at bolt on hardtails all afternoon!!

My old Tiger 90 3ta special

I had this wee Tiger 90 race special on the road for about 5 years back in the early '90s . I bought it from Charlie Pirrie in Stirling (Exact Classics) who had taken it as a trade in from a mate that had raced it with the SCRMCC for a few seasons. Basically a '59 3TA motor built to Tiger 90 spec, in a frame hand built by ex sidecar racer Alan Sheppard. Unity fiberglass tank and seat, Borrani rimmed 3ta rear and a double sided BSA front wheel in BSA forks held by John Tickle yokes.

It was great fun on the back roads around Stirling where I lived at the time, I converted the total loss battery and coil ignition to a batteryless Boyer kit. When i moved north to Achnasheen in 1997 it came with me, I found the 350 too small for the big open roads there so it got pulled down to do a 500 conversion and never went back together. I've still got the frame hanging in the rafters of the old filling station workshop .... been thinking of putting it back together, with some changes!

Bad points so far, broken fin on the head, cracked top mount on crankcases, smallend bushes worn out, rings worn out and a lot of decoke work to do!

Bedford memories

Out for a run on BlackBob this morning and i spotted this old Bedford Dormobile with its roof up. Brought back memories of Plowman family holidays at New Romney in the late 60's .... Dad had two of them and used to tow a big old caravan south from Glasgow every year

Couldnt find one with the Bedford, but here's one from the mid 70's when we did the same trip south with a Hillman Minx towing the caravan and my oldest brother following in his Hillman Inp with a couple of canoes on the roof...... seem to remember him doing two or three cylinder head jobs on the way!!

A rear wheel from a late '50s Dommie, will re use the heavy guage galv spokes ( which will clean up ok) and lace the hub into an 18" Borrani with new chromed brass nipples. Got a matching 19" rim for the front, they'll get a pair of Avon Distanzias and go on the Norton desert racer.

Bid and won a Triumph 7" 40 spoke hub and tls brakeplate, pics werent that great, but assured it was in good order........ Just got a 36 spoke Honda hub and brake in the post! Undeniably a better brake but now i need to buy a 36 hole 19" borrani for it ........ Back to the bay
